Inability to access your data stored on the data storage device could be cause by many reasons, from those that are easy to fix to those which are completely impossible to fix. If the damage is irreversible then data loss will occur.
Cause:
- bad connection to the device such as a loose wire
- physical damage to the data storage section of the device
- physical damage to the electronics of the device
- virus overwritting critical data on the device
- lost partition
- accidental formatting
- human error
This is a very small list of possible reasons why you could lose data or access to data.
- Backup your cricital files
- schedule backup restoration drills - dont just trust that your backups work check them
- run Anti-virus
- Use power surge protectors and battery backups
- Do not attempt hard drive installations or repairs if you don't have the experience to do so. Never touch your RAID unless you are absolutely sure that you know what you are doing.
- Shut down your computer and always quit your programs before doing so.
- Never shake or remove the covers on your hard drives or tapes
- Store you backups offsite (leave them at mom and dads house, a different office from the one where the servers are, or online backup services)
- Keep your computers in a ssafe location. Safe from accidents like getting knocked over or coffee spills.
